Journey
Born Tshepo Rogate Mohlala on May 7, 1999, the artist known as Alfa Kat (or Alfa Van Kat) is a visionary force in the South African "new school" scene. Growing up in the vibrant streets of Mafikeng, North West Province a legendary hub for the Motswako genre he was immersed in a culture of linguistic and musical fusion. His early life was defined by this environment, where he drew deep inspiration from pioneers like HHP and Cassper Nyovest, eventually moving to Johannesburg to scale his career.
Alfa Kat’s sound is a sophisticated blend of Amapiano, Kwaito, and Motswako. While many artists stick to a single lane, he describes his work as a "colorful and youthful" fusion, characterized by high-octane log-drum basslines and rhythmic Tswana rap. His stage name is more than a moniker; it represents his core brand and mantra: "Africans Living For Africa" (ALFA). This philosophy drives his commitment to creative independence and the promotion of local street culture on a global stage.
Alfa Kat’s breakthrough came in 2020 with the viral sensation "Phone Yam," which established him as a master of dance-centric hits. His brand reached international heights through his collaboration with the late Costa Titch on the record-breaking anthem "Big Flexa." The track’s global remix, featuring Akon, solidified Alfa Kat's status as a cross-continental ambassador.
Beyond the recording booth, his brand is synonymous with professional choreography and creative direction. He doesn't just provide the soundtrack; he designs the visual and physical language of his hits. With recent 2025/2026 releases like "Good People" and "Weh Ma Babe?", Alfa Kat continues to evolve, proving that his Mafikeng-rooted sound has the power to resonate across all borders.
